Students across Years 7-9 at Mount Alvernia College study a broad range of subjects reflecting the content, skills and achievement standards of the Australian Curriculum. Teacher evaluation of student work is guided by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority’s Standards Elaborations.

The College ensures students from Year 7-9 are engaged learners, who have the confidence and required skills to transition to subjects at Senior. Teachers are subject specialists who teach a combination of Senior and Middle School classes and understand the important preparatory work that must be undertaken in Years 7-9 in order to achieve success at Senior. They work with students purposefully to help them to clarify success criteria and grow their learning outcomes. In addition to being focussed on the learning profile of students as individuals, teachers also work with students to build foundational understanding about the ‘how’ of learning. Students from 7-9 undertake a ‘learning how to learn’ program as part of their education.

Students in Years 7-9 work from their own PC laptop and learn to use technology purposefully. They have access to a world class learning management system so that classroom resources are accessible from home, to facilitate learning. Acknowledging the importance of technology, the College also emphasises the importance of engaging with high impact learning behaviours that are more traditional. Students in Years 7 and 8 are skilled in traditional Cornell note-taking to ensure that they are able to make meaning of what they are learning.

Consistent with the best principles of Middle Schooling, the College enables a wider range of flexibility in subject choice for students in Year 8 and 9. Subject offerings are vast and intended to meet the needs of a diverse range of students. Teachers utilise a range of high impact pedagogies to ensure strong student understanding and outcomes. Curriculum is delivered both via instruction and co-construction, appealing to the diverse needs of learners.
